Worship Poetry

All of these are ideas that I have used in various ministries over the years. I hope that these will help you to spread the message of Christ around the world. Everything here is free of charge. • I Don't Understand God Sometimes

Performance Poetry Piece about how God works in mysterious ways. This comes from my own experience wrestling with the dichotomy between the times in my life where God seems like He doesn't show up (when pastor's die, or natural disasters) and the times where God shows up in a big way in worship.
  • Feels to Be Free

I was sitting at White Oak park thinking about my lesson on Revolutionary Freedom. As I was walking to the bathroom looking around at the water and the trees and the big blue sky the repeating line of this poem just came to me. "This is how it feels to be free". Another story about this is that my computer died while I was writing it and I thought I had lost all of it. I wanted to add the line "to lose words and not worry because I know that there will be more words" but no one would understand that but me.

  • The Cost

Performance poetry piece about the crucifixion. It operates on the principle that we need Jesus to be our savior so it is important to us that He was crucified.
  • Rhythm to Worship

Performance poetry piece that I used in our Spoken Word Worship gathering (check out the book Engaging Worship for the complete gathering outline). It is a simple poem about the way worship is fluid: sometimes it is engaging, some times it is full of distractions, and then in the next moment it is an encounter with God.

  • Insecurities

Performance poetry piece about my own insecurities. This came out of a time in my life when I honestly was having an imagined dialog from God and when I got a chance to ask Him one question the question I wanted to ask was "Am I good enough." It is the first perfomace piece I presented so I have a soft spot in my heart for this one.

  • What I Worship

A performance poetry piece that takes an honest look at what I worship. I give lip service to worshiping God, but too many times the truth is that if you look at my life my praise goes many other places. Two notes, Sun-Drop is a citrus soda and the italic portion is to be sung to the tune of "How Great Thou Art".

  • Lay It Down

A poem about how we often refuse to go to God and ask forgiveness. I don't know why I carry burdens around as much as I do instead of giving them to God.

  • Pursuing God

This is a poem about God's love for us and how He is pursuing us with that love.

  • Designing Worship

Too many times I spend more time working on the trapping of worship than actually trying to connect with God.
  • O Great God Who Chooses Me

A performance poetry piece about God choosing me. Growing up I was never picked for anything. I love the idea that God chooses me.
  • Lord Undo Me

  • Student Poetry

This is a collection of student poems written in our poetry prayer station at Winter Retreat 2007
