Masks

Biblical Basis: Matthew 23:37

Possible Points: Just like the Pharisees that Jesus was talking to, people in our churches today are one way on the outside and different on the outside.

Character:
Man1
Man 2
Woman 1
Woman 2
2 non-speaking roles (Rev. Jones and an extra)

Set Up: When in normal conversation everyone with a mask is wearing it. When they reach the italicized portion they raise the mask and direct those lines to the audience. When the mask is back in place normal conversation begins. The stage is set up with the three couples on the stage from left to right.

Man 1: (to Rev.) Brother Jones, I enjoyed your sermon on us men being the spiritual heads of the households. My wife needs to hear more sermons like that. (He’s the one to talk about families. His kids are wild. I hear all the stories about what his kids do on the weekends from my kids. By the way, I wonder if my kids taped the first half of the football game that I missed during the service? I bet if I hurry I can get home to see the end of the game) I’ve got to get home. I’ve got to finish planning for the deacon’s meeting tonight.

(both men freeze women 1&2 unfreeze)

Woman 1:It’s good to see your you look great, I just love that dress. We really missed you in Sunday school (Not really she never comes)

Woman 2: Well thanks, I really wish you could come (Yeah right, her class is the church gossip hour. It’s just a waste of my time. I guess I’ll ask her to choir, but I know that she won’t come) Will you be at choir rehearsal this afternoon? You know that we’re starting to practice for the Easter musical. I’m going to have a big solo this year.

Woman 1: That’s great! But I’m afraid I won’t be able to make choir. (I can’t believe it! She has a solo? She is going to ruin the whole thing!) Well, I’ve got to be going. It was good talking to you.

Woman 2: It was good to see you too. Bye!

(they freeze man2 and extra unfreeze.)

Man 2: (to the extra person) Yes, I’m excited about our new church building program. God hasn’t led me on what I should pledge financially to the building fund (If they think that they’re going to get on more dime from me they’re sadly mistaken. I already give my ten percent that’s all that God asks and that’s all that I’ll give) I’ll be praying about it, and I will see you at the next business meeting.

(four "maskies" turn to audience. They take off their mask as they say their line)

Man 1: My mask, I wear it to worship

Woman 1: My mask, I wear it when speaking to others

Man 2: It hides me from others

Woman 2: It hides me from myself
