Confessions of an Average Youth Minister

Youth Pastor

These days it seems like I have lots of jobs. As the associate pastor I end up catching much of the little things that people don’t notice. But at the end of the day I am the youth pastor. Sometimes I complain because I get treated like I am just the youth pastor. People conveniently leave me out of decisions, even ones that will effect my daily work life. People don’t feel the need to keep me informed or listen to my opinions. People generally don’t think of me as much more than just the guy that plays with the kids. That bugs the stew out of me sometimes.

But then there are the times when I get to be the youth pastor. These days in a world full of extra jobs and extra headaches and all sorts of little details it feels good when I get to be the youth pastor again. It is nice to remember that I am actually good at something, and that I get paid to do something that I love. It is feels great to see students get excited about church, and God, and worship. It is fun to just be a part of their lives as older students become leaders and younger students become worshipers.

There are times when I still get to be just a youth pastor and those times make the other times bearable.

I don't have all of the answers and some weeks it feels like I don't have any of the answers. I often find a good word picture or object lesson and build the lesson off of that instead of the other way around. I don't always pray as much as I should and I never study as much as I should. But I love students ministry. I love watching teenagers as they serve God. I love to see them worship and forget about themselves for a while. I love seeing someone wake up to the love of God if only for a little while. I love to see them out serving their community and sharing the love of Christ with others. I love to be a part of their lives and I love seeing the world through their eyes. I am an average youth minister.
