Confessions of an Average Youth Minister

Visitors

So what is your policy for visitors who come to your youth ministry. What I mean is how do you follow up with them? Do you write a letter, send a card, mail them cookies, or what?

I am asking because right now I am in the process of reworking our visitor information packet. I used to mail out a 10 page packet that told about us and our ministry to each visitor, but it got out of date and I haven’t taken the time to update it until now. So right now I am just writing visitors a letter.

I have in the past heard of good ideas that I want to implement, but never do. The best one I heard of was to go to a local pizza shop and buy a bunch of gift certificates and ask them if you can have some pizza boxes. Then when you have visitors put all of your info in the pizza box and take it to them with the coupon for a free pizza. The visits can be very short front porch type visits, but you make a lasting impact.

But what about you? What do you do to follow up with visitors?

I don't have all of the answers and some weeks it feels like I don't have any of the answers. I often find a good word picture or object lesson and build the lesson off of that instead of the other way around. I don't always pray as much as I should and I never study as much as I should. But I love students ministry. I love watching teenagers as they serve God. I love to see them worship and forget about themselves for a while. I love seeing someone wake up to the love of God if only for a little while. I love to see them out serving their community and sharing the love of Christ with others. I love to be a part of their lives and I love seeing the world through their eyes. I am an average youth minister.

  1. oooooh… Shane, you convicted me today. I just cleaned out a storage cabinet in which I found a bunch of duct tape wallets our students made to give to visitors. We’ve been very poor about following up on this. The hope was that once the students made the duct wallets, they’d be excited about giving them away… and hopefully invite people. But hasn’t worked out so great. Think I got the message I need to follow up on this…

How do you go about getting contact information to send out info packets?

Everyone who comes to our meeting fills out an information card. I generally just remember who has filled out cards and who hasn’t. But I am interested in a better system.
