Confessions of an Average Youth Minister

I am a Writer

I am reading a book on writing that we used in one of my college classes. I never finished it in college (I think we only talked about the first few chapters). Since then I have started it several times as I have tried to get back into writing. This time I am determined to go all the way to the end. Anyway, in this book (Wild Mind) the author suggest that even before you get anything published and way before you make a living at it you introduce yourself to people as a writer.

So he is my formal introduction. I am Shane and I am a writer.

I am hoping this works for other things too. Tomorrow I think I am going to be a Space Cowboy. That sounds like fun.

I don't have all of the answers and some weeks it feels like I don't have any of the answers. I often find a good word picture or object lesson and build the lesson off of that instead of the other way around. I don't always pray as much as I should and I never study as much as I should. But I love students ministry. I love watching teenagers as they serve God. I love to see them worship and forget about themselves for a while. I love seeing someone wake up to the love of God if only for a little while. I love to see them out serving their community and sharing the love of Christ with others. I love to be a part of their lives and I love seeing the world through their eyes. I am an average youth minister.

"So he is my formal introduction. I am Shane and I am a writer."

Hmmmm….well, whatever it is you decide to be when you grow up, you may want to steer clear of ‘typist’ and ‘proofreader.’ I don’t think those suit you.

J/K! You go boy! You get published in something other than youth ministry material, and I’ll be your first customer! (Not that there’s anything wrong with youth minsitry material, I just don’t have much need for it at the moment.)

  2. I’d take Space Cowboy over writer anyday.

  5. The Average Youth Minister

I wanted to be a penguin wrangler today, but that was too close to yesterday so today I am a church pirate.

Today I believe I am a dream weaver.

Today I am frisbee god. Actually that is everyday.

That’s funny. I have yet to see a respectable air bounce or even hammer from you, but if you insist.

The air bounce is almost pointless in a real game, but I can throw a hammer with the best of them.

Actually, the air bounce can be quite useful in a real game. However, you have to be fortunate enough to play against someone who’s considerably taller than you. In addition, they need to be more out of shape than you are. (Not sure what your odds are of satisfying both of these conditions.) The disc is thrown towards the ground between your opponent’s legs, then rises to land perfectly in your awaiting teammate’s grasp on the other side of your opponent. Hammers are for carpenters and MC’s.

Today is Samurai Saturday for me. Today I am a samurai!

  14. The Average Youth Minister

Today I am Nathan’s Dad and that is enough.

Today I am completely disturbed by the amount of drivel on this website, especially drivel pertaining to the art of Frisbee tossing. HOWEVER….that stuff about Shane satisfying both of the conditions….now that’s some good stuff. I nearly choked up my dinner just now laughing so hard.

  16. The Average Youth Minister

When I was a kid I wanted to be a Marine Biologist so I think that is what I am today.

  17. The Average Youth Minister

Today I am finally tired of this joke.
