Confessions of an Average Youth Minister

Missing Songs and Missing Assignments

Sometime things just don’t go how you have planned them. Tonight I was certain that I had everything ready, but after the first song my PowerPoint guy looks up at me and just shrugs. The rest of the songs were non-existent, and one of them we couldn’t even find anywhere on the computer. I don’t know what happened, but it was a terrible situation. Oh well, I guess that is life when you are an average youth minister.

Winter Retreat planning is starting to kick into high gear. I am feeling very pressured right now not because I think I can’t get everything finished, but because I think I am right on schedule and that scares me. I am sure that I am forgetting something, but for the life of me I can remember it right now. I guess I will remember it while we are there and I will get about 2 hours of sleep the whole weekend again because of it, but there is nothing I can do about that now.

I don't have all of the answers and some weeks it feels like I don't have any of the answers. I often find a good word picture or object lesson and build the lesson off of that instead of the other way around. I don't always pray as much as I should and I never study as much as I should. But I love students ministry. I love watching teenagers as they serve God. I love to see them worship and forget about themselves for a while. I love seeing someone wake up to the love of God if only for a little while. I love to see them out serving their community and sharing the love of Christ with others. I love to be a part of their lives and I love seeing the world through their eyes. I am an average youth minister.
